A Library Story
A young man, definitely not a library regular, walked in one morning, summoned his courage, and approached the circulation desk with a problem. While walking the banks of White River, metal-detecting for treasures, he had found an old high school class ring. He hoped to find the owner, possibly to sell it back to him. This was a fairly easy request, the name of the school, the date, and the owner's initials were inscribed within the ring, and were legible. So we consulted the school yearbooks (we keep a set here at the library), looking to match up the initials. We found matching initials. The young man was quite pleased and so were we. I informed him that the brother of the owner of the ring worked in downtown Bicknell, so the finder, ring in hand, went to meet him. The brother was interested in the ring, and had a most unusual story to tell. The brother who owned the ring had lost it several years ago, and probably had forgotten all about it. Now he lived on the East coast, and was quite ill. Several members of the family were planning to leave just within a matter of days for what they thought might well be their last visit with him. When they saw the ring, they wanted to take it to him. The young man could have named his price, but proving that he really was the "good kid" I knew he was, he said "no charge" and handed over his find. The best part for us at the library was that the young man returned to the library, and shared the end of the story with us.
